Perhaps you want to look younger, gain self-confidence, or change a feature you are unhappy with.

The first step is to become as educated as possible about the options available to you. The following Q&A with Dr. Change should answer some of your questions, and help you decide if nonsurgical cosmetic procedures and/or plastic surgery are right for you.

Q: What should I know when choosing a plastic surgeon?

A: You may find that doctors in various practice areas perform cosmetic procedures. They may be board certified by their specialty, but they are not plastic surgeons.

Approximately 30 percent of doctors performing cosmetic procedures are plastic surgeons who are board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgeons (ABPS). This is the only board that certifies surgeons in plastic surgery of the face and entire body. Board certification by the ABPS is the most distinguished and rigorous of cosmetic surgery certifications and should be a major consideration in selecting a surgeon.

Q: What is the difference between BOTOX® and Dermal Fillers?

A: BOTOX® Cosmetic is used to reduce wrinkles, usually in the upper face and around the eyes. It involves injecting minimal amounts of purified botulinum toxin to weaken specific facial muscles. As a result, wrinkles relax and soften, usually lasting three to four months.
There are several types of dermal fillers, such as Juvederm and Radiesse. These substances are injected into the skin and remain there for nine to 12 months. They are primarily used on the lower two-thirds of the face to replace volume loss associated with aging. Dermal fillers are often used to fill deep lines between the nose and mouth, to correct the downturn at the ends of the mouth, to correct the appearance of bags under the eyes, and to plump the lips.

Q: I’m thinking of having a tummy tuck. What if I decide after that I want another child?

A: A tummy tuck (or abdominoplasty) involves surgically removing excess skin and fat from the middle and lower part of the abdomen, and sometimes tightening the abdominal muscles. Ideally, women planning future pregnancies should consider waiting for a tummy tuck. Women who have had a tummy tuck and then become pregnant are at risk that the muscles that were tightened during a tummy tuck may separate again. However, many women become pregnant after tummy tuck surgery and do not experience any problems.

Q: Can I breastfeed after breast augmentation?

A: Having breast implants does not mean you won’t be able to breastfeed your baby. If you have breast augmentation during your childbearing years, it is important to have the procedure performed by an experienced and skilled board-certified plastic surgeon. This will limit the risks of your breast implants interfering with lactation.

Q: I want to look natural, but my face is showing signs of aging. What can I do to help turn back the clock?

A: A mini-facelift may be the perfect solution to help restore the appearance of your face while allowing you to retain your natural appearance. It will help reduce sagging around your neck, jawline and cheeks. The procedure, sometimes called a weekend lift, usually takes an hour and requires no general anesthesia. Swelling and bruising is minimal, and the recovery period is just a few days. While the results will not last as long, it’s a less invasive procedure than a traditional facelift.

Q: What is the difference between IPL PhotoFacial, ProFractional and MicroLaser Peel?

A: IPL PhotoFacial reduces or eliminates brown spots and freckling due to sun damage and/or redness associated with Rosacea. Many areas of the body can be treated with an IPL PhotoFacial including the face, chest, back, arms, legs, and hands.

ProFractional Laser treatments produce collagen, tighten skin, and treat fine lines and scarring. This technology penetrates deep into the dermis in micro-zones. A ProFractional treatment is likened to aerating your lawn; after a few days your face looks renewed, as does your lawn.

MicroLaser Peel resurfaces the face. This treatment reduces fine lines and irregular pigmentation for a more uniform facial texture and color. For optimal results, many patients combine two or three laser treatments, according to their individual goals.

Q: If I have plastic surgery, will I have scars?

A: Scars are a natural part of the healing process after plastic surgery. Most scars will ultimately become flat, pale areas the same size as the original incision. Various factors affect how scars heal, including things like nutrition, heredity, race and smoking. A board certified plastic surgeon has been trained in techniques to minimize scars.

Q: I don’t want larger breasts, but mine are sagging. Is there anything I can do?

A: Many women find themselves with droopy breasts caused by pregnancy, breast-feeding or age. These women are good candidates for a breast lift. Some of these women who have lost breast fullness may also benefit from breast implants.

Q: Is laser liposuction as good as traditional liposuction?

A: Traditional and laser liposuction procedures remove fat from your body using suction. Laser-assisted lipolysis, known as laser liposuction, is a relatively new alternative to traditional liposuction and is often sought by those who are adverse to surgery. This procedure is most effective when the goal is to remove small amounts of fat. It is performed under local anesthesia and generally has a faster recovery time than traditional liposuction.

Traditional liposuction is a surgical procedure that usually requires general anesthesia. It is most effective in removing significant amounts of fat from the body. Despite the increased risk of traditional liposuction, we believe that traditional liposuction results are superior to those of laser liposuction.

Dr. Phillip Chang is Board Certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgeons. Dr. Chang’s plastic surgery practice, Aesthetica Cosmetic Surgery & Laser Center, is located in the Lansdowne area of Leesburg, Virginia.

A chiseled chin may be the latest “must have” body part. A new report shows improvements to the jawline is the fastest-growing plastic surgery trend among men and women.

Researchers say the trend appears to be fueled by a combination of increasing use of video chats, an aging baby boomer population, and competition in the workplace.

The chin and jawline are among the first areas to show signs of aging. As more people see themselves on video chat technology, they may notice that their jawline is not as sharp as they want it to be.

Procedures such as neck liposuction can drastically alter the appearance of the neck and bring the jawline a youthful appearance.

Breast cancer treatment is stressful and overwhelming. You’ve had your mastectomy and if you chose not to have reconstruction surgery at the time of your procedure you might be feeling confused about what to do now. You know you would like to feel whole again but maybe you’re unsure about having to go through another procedure. Many women share these thoughts. It’s only natural to want to reshape and rejuvenate your breasts back to a more natural and youthful state, (especially after cancer treatment) and breast reconstruction is a relatively simple way of doing so.

I can understand the hesitations many women may have when deciding whether or not to undergo breast reconstruction after a mastectomy. But I still find it surprising to learn that more breast cancer patients don’t opt for reconstructive surgery after their mastectomies because most women find that they are very happy once they decide to move forward with the reconstructive procedure.

Of 106,988 breast cancer patients who underwent a mastectomy from 2000 to 2010, only about 22 percent chose to also have reconstructive breast surgery directly after. These numbers are of particular interest to me because my experience with breast lift surgery began while I was caring for breast cancer patients who lost part or all of their breasts during treatment.

Research has shown that reconstructive breast surgery can be extremely helpful in improving both the quality of life and the overall psychological well being of mastectomy patients. Many breast cancer patients feel distressed when they look down to find a flat, scarred chest post-mastectomy. I’ve seen so many reconstructive surgeries (whether performed immediately after treatment or a bit farther down the road) help women to regain their confidence and get back to living their normal, pre-cancer lives’. One patient remarked, “The huge difference is my self esteem and feeling like a woman again.”

The first step on the road to new breasts is talking to a surgeon. My main priority will always be to openly discuss what you hope to achieve and expect from your reconstruction and then provide you with each and every option available to ensure you to achieve the perfect result.

Women choose to undergo breast enhancement procedures for many different reasons; each situation is unique and personal. If you’re recovering from breast cancer treatment and find yourself thinking about wanting to feel more comfortable in your skin again their are many reconstruction options that can restore your breasts to a very natural and authentic shape and get you back on the road to a normal everyday life.

TURN BACK TIME. As time goes on, the effects of gravity, sun exposure and life stresses show up in the aging face. The irony is that many people who have hit mid-life feel energetic and on top of their game yet they look older and more tired than they feel.

Many people hesitate to get a facelift because they worry about looking “too pulled” or feel that they are too young for the procedure. In addition, plastic surgery reality shows show facelifts that require hospitalization, general anesthesia, and long and painful healing periods. Typically, the traditional facelift requires more than 4 hours to perform and 4 weeks for healing.

In today’s world people want a younger looking face but don’t want to take significant time away from their busy schedule. Also, they want a natural appearance that doesn’t look “plastic”.

The Weekend Facelift was developed as a modification of several facelift techniques to create a more youthful jawline and neck without the downside and downtime of a traditional facelift. The procedure involves a considerably smaller scar than a standard facelift and is performed in an office operating suite under local anesthesia.

One of the many advantages of The Harmony Weekend Facelift is the time it takes to have the procedure – about 1 hour. The term “weekend facelift” is used because some patients can have the procedure on a Friday and return to work on Monday. However, many people do take a few more days off before returning to work.

Dr. Phillip Chang of Aesthetica Cosmetic Surgery & Laser Center stays at the forefront of cosmetic breast surgery by being one of the first local plastic surgeons to use the Keller Funnel to minimize scars and implant trauma. Dr. Chang has perfected the Keller Funnel technique for both Breast Augmentation and Breast Lift procedures. Dr. Chang has offices in Loudoun and Fairfax Counties in Northern Virginia: This is the most revolutionary device to decrease scars and complications from breast augmentations to come around in years

Leesburg, VA (PRWEB) May 22, 2010 – Ten years ago, Dr. Chang introduced and taught his Transaxillary Breast Augmentation (underarm) technique to minimize breast augmentation scars. Last year, he was one of the first local plastic surgeons to offer the On-Q Pain Pump to his patients to minimize their postoperative pain. This year, Dr. Chang was one of the first local plastic surgeons to regularly use the Keller Funnel to minimize the length of scars in his breast surgery patients, as well as minimize the risk of trauma and bacterial infections that may cause implant ruptures and scarring around the implant, respectively. The Keller Funnel device was introduced at the Annual Conference of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) in 2009.

Dr. Phillip Chang, MD ( plastic surgeon in Loudoun and Fairfax Virginia )Breast Augmentation, also known as Breast Enlargement, is one of the most common surgical procedures performed by Dr. Chang. According to the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), Breast Augmentation was the most popular cosmetic surgical procedure in the United States in 2008. Many patients decide to have a breast augmentation prior to having children. But the majority of patients decide to have a breast augmentation after having children as part of a Mommy Makeover Procedure to restore and rejuvenate their breasts. Due to pregnancy and breastfeeding, a woman’s breasts lose volume and roundness, the stretch on their skin leads to drooping, and the nipple-areola complex may become larger. Post-childbirth women often want to return their breasts to what they might have looked like before having children.

The Keller Funnel is a cone-shaped device designed to help surgeons place a pre-filled silicone breast implant into the breast pocket through an incision as small as three centimeters (cm). The cone is lined with a hydrophilic polymer coating, a special lubricant that — when moistened — makes the funnel so slippery that an implant can be placed without ever being touched by human hands. Dr. Chang cites at least three reasons do have a breast augmentation using a Keller Funnel Device:

1. Minimize the length of the scar;
2. Minimize the trauma of putting the implant into the surgical pocket;
3. Minimize the amount of bacterial contamination.

The benefit of minimizing the length of the scar is self-evident. To take a patient with an A-cup breast to a C-cup breast used to make a scar of at least seven- to-nine cm in length. The silicone breast implant can now be placed through a Keller Funnel with just a five cm incision. The benefit of decreasing the trauma of breast implant placement is also self-evident. Researchers have determined that the most common cause of implant rupture, even 10 years after the breast implant surgery, was trauma to the implant at the time of rupture. The effort of placing the implant with Keller Funnel is only a fraction of what is traditionally necessary. Finally, by delivering the breast implant through the Keller Funnel, the implant never touches the patient’s skin. Additionally, the implant is never touched by the surgeon or nurse — even wearing surgical gloves in a sterile environment — which reduces the risk of infection and capsular contracture.

Dr. Chang has performed the Keller Funnel procedure on dozens of patients. He states that his patients often compare surgical scars with their girlfriends who have also had Breast Augmentations, and universally, they say that they have the smaller incisions. Before and After Pictures of Breast Implant Procedures can be seen at Dr. Chang’s website at http://www.gotobeauty.com/breast-augmentation-before-after.php

More on the Keller Funnel can be seen on the Plastic Surgery Channel at http://www.theplasticsurgerychannel.com/breast-augmentation/breast-augmentation-risk-reduced-with-keller-funnel/
