The appearance of aging is not isolated to the face. More and more frequently, patients are seeking out solutions to address the aging appearance of their hands. These changes come as the skin begins to lose elasticity, collagen and volume, seen in the form of crepe-y skin appearing on the back of the hands, sun damage and age spots, and prominent appearing veins.
Fortunately, Dr. Chang and the staff at Aesthetica Cosmetic Surgery in Lansdowne have created a guide that may help you explore ways to restore the youthful radiance to your aging hands.
How do you improve the appearance of the aging hand?
There are 3 changes that potentially need to be considered when you are evaluating the aging hand:
- Volume loss
- Sun damage and age spots
- Prominent veins
Areas of the face and body may lose fat volume with age, which contributes to the gaunt-like appearance of the face as skin matures. A similar aging process also occurs in the hands; the loss of fat and muscle volume may make the skin look loose and crepe-y.
Volume loss in the hands may be addressed by injectable fillers like Juvederm®, Voluma®, Radiesse®, or Sculptra®. The benefit of injectable fillers is that the procedure can be performed in 15 minutes, and may provide immediate results with little to no recovery (our patients typically return to work after the procedure).
Alternatively, some patients may be candidates for fat transfer. Our fat transfer procedure can be performed in an hour. Although fat transfer has a longer recovery time (3-5 days with a compression wrap), this procedure has the potential benefit of longer lasting results.
Sun Damage and Age Spots
We often associate a glowing, radiant complexion with good health. But UV exposure from the sun – or tanning booth – actually accelerates many of the harmful effects of aging. This may include injuring cellular DNA, increasing abnormal pigmentation, and damaging cellular elastin. The resulting skin appearance may be stretched and loose with patchy brown age spots.
The Forever Young BBL™ is an advanced form of Photofacial by Sciton using broadband light (BBL) that is an effective treatment option for the appearance of abnormal age spots on the hands. The treatment is non-surgical and can be performed in 15 minutes, with little to no recovery (our patients typically return to work the same day the treatment is performed). Regular maintenance treatments using the Forever Young BBL™ system have the potential to slow down aging and keep the hands clear of wrinkles and brown spots.
BBL may also help to reverse some of the damage done to the cellular DNA; research performed by members of the Department of Dermatology at Stanford University School of Medicine sheds some light on this subject.
Appearance of Prominent Veins
Veins on the back of the hand may dilate and appear more visible and prominent with age, particularly as the skin begins to thin and the fat begins to recede from the area.
Veins can often be “camouflaged” by adding injectable fillers or fat, but if the veins are particularly prominent, they may benefit from surgical removal. At Aesthetica, our experts surgically remove veins in a procedure that takes about 30 minutes. It is performed by way of very small and inconspicuous incisions. Although most patients can return to work the next day, a compression wrap is required for 3 days.
