What is a Mommy Makeover?
A “Mommy Makeover” means different things to different people, but for most of my patients who have experienced the joy of having children, there is a unifying theme which is best summed up by a letter I once received from one of my patients:
“I am a 36 year old mother of 2 beautiful children. They are the light of my life, but they have changed forever what I used to consider a beautiful face and body. My husband reassures me that I am still beautiful, but I know he has to see that my face is more haggard, my breasts are not as full and sag just a little. And I know he has to see the stretch marks and modest pooch I have in my lower belly.” E. C.
This patient’s feelings about her family and herself describe the vast majority of Dr. Chang’s Mommy Makeover patients. The bottom line is that women sacrifice many things for their families; not the least of which is the appearance of their bodies.
Because of E.C. and hundreds of other patients like her, Dr. Chang developed a comprehensive concept for “Mommy-Makeover” procedures to restore many of the more youthful properties they had before they became mothers. Some of these women can be seen in the before and after pages. Imagine the possibilities for you.
Frequently Asked Questions
Am I a good candidate?
The simple answer is yes if you have had children. Having children inevitably changes your body. Changes occur in your breasts, belly, vagina, and even your face. The typical mommy makeover addresses only the first two back, but can address all of these areas. A good candidate is a women in good health, finished having children, close to a healthy goal weight, and who wants to get back to her pre-pregnancy appearance. If you find yourself wanting fuller more uplifted breasts, flatter abdomen, thinner hips, tighter vagina without urinary leakage, then you are a good candidate.
How long will my surgery take?
How long your surgery will take will depend on what procedures you will need. The typical mommy makeover includes a breast augmentation and/or lift, a tummy tuck, liposuction of the hips and sometimes saddle bags. Often included will be a labiaplasty and minor forms of facial rejuvenation like botox, or facial fillers. Breast augmentation will take about one hour. When combined with a breast lift it might take about 2 hours. A tummy tuck with liposuction typically takes about 3 hours. And a labiaplasty takes about 1 hour.
How much pain can I expect from a Mommy Makeover?
Dare I say that beauty hurts? Unfortunately, the typical mommy makeover procedure is rather painful because the procedure involves the chest and abdominal muscles. Fortunately, many of my patients can choose to have a long acting pain medication injected into the affected areas that should give nearly complete pain relive for 3 days. Even if you choose not to use Experil, I always will inject a long acting pain medication called Bupivicaine ( or Marcaine ) that will last you through most of the first day. Thereafter, any discomfort can be controlled with over-the-counter oral narcotics like Percocet, Vicodin, or Tylenol #3.
How long is the recovery after a Mommy Makeover?
Recovery after a Mommy Makeover varies depending on the procedures that you have. The worst pain lasts about 3 days. Most patients are back to work after a Mommy Makeover in 2 weeks. Most patients are allowed to drive after a Mommy Makeover in 2 weeks or after being off of narcotics for 2 days. Light exercise can resume in about 2-3 weeks. More strenuous exercise is not recommended for 4-6 weeks. Results vary but can not be appropriately assessed for 3 months. Complete recovery and settling takes up to a year. We will be closely monitoring your progress and will let you know how quickly you can begin engaging in activities such as exercise and lifting.
How long will my results last after a Mommy Makeover?
The results of a Mommy Makeover will last as long as you don’t have substantial weight gain or another child after your surgery.
Can I have children after having a Mommy Makeover?
You should never have a tummy tuck is you are planning on having more children. This does not mean that you can’t as I have had patients have the occasional “woops”. But this will stretch out the abdominal muscles that have tightened and ruin the results that I have provided. The breast might be more forgiving. Patients will often have a breast augmentation and/or lift after having a Mommy Makeover
Is a Mommy Makeover safe?
It is important to remember that a Mommy Makeover procedure is a collection of other surgeries, each with their own risks. It is overall a very safe and common procedure that I perform. Refer to the pages on breast augmentation, breast lift, tummy tuck or abdominoplasty, and labiaplasty and the Diva Laser Vaginal Rejuvenation.
Is a Mommy Makeover an outpatient or inpatient procedure?
Mommy Makeovers can often be done on an outpatient basis, with no need for an overnight stay. You will remain in our facility for a while after surgery, so we can monitor your recovery. Some very rare patients will require an overnight hospital stay depending on your age, health, and extent of procedures. You will need to have a friend or family member drive you home.
How much does a Mommy Makeover cost?
The cost of a Mommy Makeover is dependent on the types and number of procedures involved. Each situation is unique. After an initial complimentary consultation, a customized treatment plan will be created that is tailored to your individual needs and budget. A typical patient getting a breast augmentation, tummy tuck, hip liposuction, and labiaplasty can range from $15,000 to $20,000.
