Your forehead is a major focal point for expression on your face. It helps you express concern, surprise, curiosity, worry and so much more. Over time, all those expressions etch their lines across your forehead. Also, aging and gravity can cause the forehead muscles to weaken and the skin to loosen. Forehead wrinkles are a natural part of getting older, but if you don’t like them, or they appear prematurely, there are a number of steps you can take to reduce—or eliminate—their appearance.
1. Makeup Tricks
A light-reflecting primer under your liquid foundation will camouflage fine lines. Primer keeps makeup from settling into—and emphasizing—furrows. Illuminating primers contain tiny specks of mica, a sparkly mineral that settles into lines and reflects light away from them, lessening their appearance. Apply a thin layer over your moisturizer before you apply foundation.
2. Moisturizers and Serums
Moisturizers with peptides or retinol and retinoids can stimulate collagen to plump skin. Some serums offer a way to “spot treat” only your deep wrinkles. While these serums can never erase your wrinkles, they can diminish their appearance somewhat when used consistently over time.
Drink plenty of water. If you’re dehydrated on the inside, it will start to show on the outside, and dry skin is more prone to visible wrinkling. Stay as hydrated as possible. You may wish to consider drinking mineral water instead of the tap variety. A 2008 study at Leeds University (UK) showed a particular brand of mineral water, Deeside Water from Scotland, to reduce the appearance of skin wrinkles 25 percent more than tap water.
Many people choose to cover their forehead wrinkles by using their hair. Soft, brow-skimming bangs creates a stylish “veil”. Use only a low side part with bangs, as a center part only draws attention to the forehead by framing it.
5. Chemical Peel
Consider a chemical peel or dermabrasion to resurface your skin. In the chemical peel procedure, alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), trichloroacetic acids (TCAs) or phenols are used to remove the outer layer of the skin, revealing a less-damaged (and wrinkled) under-layer. Dermabrasion achieves similar results, although it involves a controlled surgical scraping rather than chemicals to remove the skin layer.
6. BOTOX and Juvéderm
BOTOX® is the most effective in-office procedure for stopping your forehead creases from getting worse. BOTOX® blocks the nerve impulses that cause your facial muscles to contract, keeping lines from getting deeper. You’ll need to get injections every 3 to 6 months to maintain the effects. To plump out especially deep lines, fillers such as Juvéderm may be needed.
7. Forehead Lift
A forehead lift is very commonly performed along with eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) to reduce sagging skin on the upper and lower eyelids. Unlike BOTOX®, a forehead lift is a more permanent approach to removing wrinkles in the forehead. The forehead lift (also known as a browlift or browplasty) is a cosmetic surgery procedure which both elevates drooping eyebrows that obstruct vision and removes deep “worry” lines that run across the forehead (lines that may be too deep for BOTOX® to effectively treat) creating a more youthful appearance.
Some methods to reduce the appearance of forehead wrinkles work better than others. While moisturizers, serums, hairstyles and makeup can provide temporary fixes, the only way to really achieve a noticeable result is through cosmetic procedures. To research your options, you need to first select a surgeon that is board certified in plastic surgery and has extensive expertise, training and experience. Your surgeon should be someone who listens to you, who explains the procedure thoroughly and who specializes in achieving the most natural-looking results with minimally invasive techniques.
